For the first time ever, this story was inspired by films. I have been a fan of Star Trek since the first film was released. But with the passage of time, I have become increasingly dissatisfied by how the ‘alien concepts’ were handled. The characters, the story lines, the action sequences, the technology – all this has been steadily improved and updated and rendered ever more sophisticated. But the aliens have all remained based upon human structures. CGI has improved by leaps and bounds. Other recent award-winning films, such as Arrival, have completely revamped the concept of who aliens might be, and why they might seek contact. I wanted to create a Star Wars type of story, with strong characters and a positive overall theme, but based around a NEW alien concept. One that challenges. One that hopefully creates a sense of stretching our vision of what might be out there.
